Onomatompoeia & Rock Stars

Here's a silly/fun activity to help your students learn about onomatopoeia.  Have each child write down four examples of onomatopoeia.

Sing the song to the tune of London Bridge.  Take turns using the children's examples to sing the last line.

on - o - mat - o - poeia,  poeia,  poeia

on - o - mat - o - poeia

drip, drop, splish, splash  (example)

  On another note . . .

At my school we test our 2nd and 3rd graders each month using the STAR test.  Some of our students loose enthusiasm for putting their best effort into these tests.  As an incentive for them to do their best, I've started painting rocks for the groups of students I teach. (I'm the Title 1 reading specialist for my building.)  If they make a higher score this month than last, they are one of my #RockStars and get to select a painted rock.  It's amazing how something so simple can motivate some children!  I'll be continuing to paint rocks for my cherubs each month.

My favorite graphic artist, Ashley McCulloch, has a couple of freebies up on her site, Thistlegirl Designs right now that you might love to have in your classroom.  Scroll through her site and you'll find several more of these quotes and proverbs, along with all kinds of other cute graphics-some free, some for purchase.
