Thursday Thanks

My Hawaiian blogfriend, Corinna, at Surfin' Through Second emailed me with exciting news.  I won her blogiversary drawing for a $30 Amazon gift card!  This is the first time I've won any kind of bloggift.  What a cool way to end my day!  Thank you, thank you, thank you, and mahalo, Corinna.

Dear readers, it will be time well spent to head over to Corinna's blog and check it out.  It's highly visually appealing and full of good ideas and freebies.

Welcome Wagon

Welcome, Glitter Artist!  (Do I detect a little glitter on your wagon? ;-}) Checked out your blog, Learning Curve, and discovered you're quite an artistic person.  I'd love to hear more about the far-away places you lived.

Friday Fun

The week's reading selection was Joseph Bruchac's, Pushing Up the Sky.  My class really enjoyed reading it aloud with girls, boys, and the whole group expressively reading the play aloud.  This afternoon they each drew a character from the play and were so pleased with their results.  Unfortunately, the  pictures don't do them justice.

Welcome Wagon

Another Wagoneer just pulled her wagon into my line.  Welcome, Laureen!  My other Wagoneers and Wagon Watchers will get a wagon-load of ideas from your blog, Teach With Laughter.

If you live in Oklahoma, you have a little dusting of snow in your wagon today! It's our first real snow of this winter.   My class went out and caught snowflakes on black pieces of paper and examined them with magnifying glasses.   Then they came in and wrote their observations.  They thought that was a very fun lesson.

Tuesday Tune

OK, boys and girls!  It's time for another cornball concert.
We reviewed pronouns today.  Here's the song we sing.

(Tune: Bingo)

There are words that take the place

Of many different nouns-o.

I, you, it, he, she,

They, we, us, them, me,

These are pronouns. See?

Pronoun is their name-o.

Monday Memo

Our students were off today, and we teachers had professional development workshops.  It's always nice to attend workshops that dispense good information and cause you to come away with ideas you can put to use in your classroom immediately.  I hope the one I presented on infusing literacy through the curriculum was as helpful to my participants as the two sessions I attended.

Wednesday Wondering

Here's a random thought for you.

Many if not most elementary teachers use some sort of pass for children to carry when they go to the restroom.  Have you ever wondered what results would show if these were swabbed and analyzed?

Tuesday Thoughts

A horrific tragedy struck our school district Monday morning when a young man took his life at the ninth grade center.  While I didn't know him, I am so saddened by his desperate act.  The impact of such an event is wide-spread.  From the students and staff in that building, to the administrators who have done an exceptional job through this, to the emergency personnel who responded so quickly to the call for help, to the parents who came frantically to pick up their children and whisk them to safety, to the counselors and local ministers who have stepped into offer support, to our little rural community as a whole, and especially to the boy's family, all have been shaken to the core.  We're changed forever.

Long after the rabid media have finally let this news rest, the hurt and scars will remain.  The road to emotional healing will be long and rocky.  Please pray for all those mentioned above.

Friday Football

Are you ready for some football?  My class made predictions for the Super Bowl results.  The boys decorated footballs to use for voting.  The girls made pom poms out of 2 strips of their favorite team's colors.  They fringed and rolled them and spread out the fringe.

I'm not sure how the boys made their choices.  Most of the girls made their choices based on the fact that one of the Raven's team colors is purple!

Monday I'll use the chart as a behavior
motivator.  The students who make good choices all day will be in the drawing to
win the chart.
